Third seed Marcel Granollers ended Albert Montanes' campaign for a third Portugal Open trophy on Wednesday. The World No. 31 rallied from a set down to record a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 triumph over the 2009-'10 champion in two hours and 19 minutes.
Granollers, who improves to 3-2 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against his fellow Spaniard, next faces qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who became the first player to reach the Portugal Open quarter-finals on Wednesday after a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over wild card Rui Machado.
Gimeno-Traver could not convert one match point when serving at 5-4, but completed his seventh win of the year in one hour and 38 minutes.
Earlier in the day, one of last year’s quarter-finalists, wild card Gastao Elias, lost just three of his first service points to beat Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-3. He will next play in-form fourth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who picked up his third ATP World Tour title at the recent Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca (d. Granollers).
