Took advantage of his wildcard opportunity at Stuttgart in July 1989 and reached the semifinals in only his second ever Grand Prix. En route to the semifinals he defeated claycourt veterans Bruno Oresar, top-seed Jakob Hlasek Jan Gunnarsson, and Guillermo Perez-Roldan. He lost 57 64 63 in the semi- finals to eventual champion Martin Jaite. The performance lifted his ATP computer ranking from 144 into the top 100 for the first time at No. 73. Improved the last two years on the ATP computer from 795 in 1987 to 486 in 1988 to No. 55 in 1989. Compiled a 9-5 match record and earned a career- high $44,752 in '89.
