Attends the Australian Institute of Sport, a school that includes some of Australia's finest junior athletes. Member of Australia's 1987 winning World Youth Cup team. Winner of 16-under Indoor title. He took advantage of his wildcard at Adelaide and reached the semifinals losing to eventual champion Mark Woodforde. Also advanced to the semifinals of Bastad in 1989 (as a qualifier), defeating Miloslav Mecir in the 1st Rd. Coached by Ray Ruffles. He began playing tennis at age 7. Won the 1989 Australian Open and French Open junior doubles titles (w/ Todd Woodbridge). Broke into the top 100 for the first time at No. 91 on Oct. 16, 1989 from 128 after reaching the semifinals of the Sydney Indoor. Earned a career-best $60,696 while finishing a year-end best 101 on the ATP computer (from 208) in 1989.
